Bang Tao beach lies on the west coast of Phuket island and is a long expansive beach which stretches for almost 9km.
There are many prestigious five-star hotels and villa developments along the beach, including the Laguna resort, home to the Banyan Tree Phuket, and as a result the area offers superb facilities for tourists and expats who live in the area. Yet Bang Tao beach is not over crowded and is regarded as one of the most picturesque beaches in Phuket. It is possible to find deserted parts of the beach at most times of the year.
To the south it borders the Amanpuri Hotel and Pansea beach, detached by a rocky headland, and to the north it joins Layan beach. It is a popular location for windsurfers and hosts several international competitions each year.
Tin mining was the main industry in Phuket until the early 1980's and Bang Tao was a major mining site. When the industry fell into decline tourism took over as the major income for the island. Around this time Laguna Resorts purchased a large disused tin mining site and transformed it into Asia´s first complex of 5 star resort hotels on one site with manicured lawns and lagoons. The Banyan Tree Golf Course is regarded as one of the finest in Asia and Nick Faldo was very impressed with the course when he played during his holiday in Phuket.
Investors have seen high capital growth in the Bang Tao area and some have seen increases as high as 70% in less than 3 years. It is likely that this growth will continue due to substantial land purchases in the area by other leading hotel groups.
Bang Tao, however, still manages to retain it's local feel, with many small restaurants and bars being set amongst the luxury resorts. It is primarily a local fishing village and longtail boats fish the waters daily. Stalls can be found in the early morning along the main beach road selling fresh fish from the days catch. Many local restaurants and hotels buy fish directly from the fishermen, ensuring excellent quality seafood wherever you choose to eat in Bang Tao.
The long stretch of beach always ensures you can find your own space and the northern end the beach is usually very quiet with just a few local bars. It is a good place to sit and relax after a hard days work or play, watching the waves breaking on the shore and the sun setting over the Andaman Sea.
