Patong beach, located on Phuket´s west coast, is probably the best known of all Phuket resort destinations.
Well established as a popular tourist centre Patong has gained in popularity and notoriety since the early 1980´s.
Once a small fishing village, today it is a bustling resort offering a wide range of facilities and attractions. There are an almost infinite number of hotels, guest houses, bars, restaurants, shopping centres, tuk-tuks and of course an excellent white sandy beach.
Famous for it's nightlife and holiday atmosphere, Patong has a reputation as a town where anything goes and it is possible to find just about everything in Patong´s bustling streets. From cheap and tacky souvenirs to hand crafted ornaments and original artwork, Patong has it all.
Patong´s reputation for nightlife is notorious and by night the town lives up to that as a lively metropolis full of bars, cabaret shows and night clubs. During the night Patong is not a town for the faint hearted and you must be prepared to witness just about anything from Thai boxing arenas to 'ping pong' shows.
By day, Patong takes on a much more relaxed atmosphere and it is certainly a place where families can relax together without worry. The beach is an excellent place for sunbathing and water sports.
For those seeking some adventure it is possible to go bungee jumping, parasailing, diving, elephant treking and much more. There are also many tour operators in Patong who can organise day trips around the many neighbouring islands of Phuket.
The property market in Patong is mixed but mainly geared towards the rental market with many reasonably priced apartments and condominiums on offer.
Love it or hate it, Patong has developed into a thriving commercial centre. Its reputation is somewhat undeserved, but not one which is likely to change in the near future.
