17/09/2009 - Phuket International Conference Centre plan approved

The Thai government has approved two billion Baht in funding for an International Conference Centre and sports complex to be built in Phuket.

The centre will be built on 150 Rai(240000m2) in Mai Khao on the north west coast of Phuket.  An additonal 150 Rai will be dedicated to gardens and landscaping and talks are underway with the National Parks authority to extend the site even further.

Anchalee Wanichthepphabutr, deputy secretary to the prime minister, said that the centre would meet international standards and allow Phuket to appeal to the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market as well as attracting new tourism.

A final design and impact study could take several months and it is hoped that parts of the centre will be operational within three years.

The idea of locating the centre in the north of the island makes sense with the close proximatey to Phuket International Airport and several large scale resorts including Outrigger West Sands and Mai Khao Dreams.
