04/11/2009 - Air Berlin and Bangkok Airways sign codeshare agreement

Bangkok Airways have signed a codeshare agreement with Germany's second largest carrier, Air Berlin.  The agreement will allow Bangkok Airways to connect Air Berlin's passengers to key destinations throughout Thailand, such as Phuket, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai under the same flight code.

Air Berlin currently operates nine weekly flights from Dusseldorf, Berlin-Tegel and Munich in Germany to Bangkok. The new agreement will come into place on 1st November.  Bangkok Airways has similar codeshare agreements with Etihad Airways and Air France.

This is certainly another positive sign for tourism in Phuket.  Last month Air Asia stated that they would be permanently basing at least five aircraft at Phuket airport as part of plans for a second Thailand hub.  This will allow Phuket residents to fly directly to destinations such as Jakarta, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Chiang Mai on scheduled flights for the first time.
