18/06/2010 - Phuket voted Best Asian Maritime Capital

Phuket was recently voted 'Best Asian Maritime Capital' in the annual Christofle Asian Boating Awards 2010.

The awards were first held in 2005 - the prize going to Singapore last year.

Phuket attracted the popular vote amongst the 20 judges, who rewarded Phuket for its first-class boating facilities, which include modern marinas, state-of-the-art boatyards and prime chartering services.

In fact, Phuket's boating community pretty much cleaned up at the awards ceremony, which was held at the Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok, with the annual King’s Cup Regatta winning Yachting Event of the Year for the second year in a row and Phuket based Asia Marine taking the award for Best Asia-Based Charter Company.

Cruising around Phang Nga Bay’s majestic limestone islands, just off the coast of Phuket, it is not difficult to see why Phuket is so popular with sailors; the tall statuesque islands literally dot the bay, just a few hundred metres off the east coast of Phuket. Amazingly beautiful and awe inspiring to see, the islands are covered in vegetation which seems to cling almost impossibly to the sides and they are also home to many rare species of birds and animals - a closer inspection reveals secret caves and hidden lagoons.

In fact, Hollywood chose this location for several blockbuster movies: The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and more recently  The Beach (2000), all have scenes shot in Phang Nga Bay.  Koh Tapu, known locally as ‘James Bond Island’, featured in The Man with the Golden Gun is the most famous of the islands.

"This is a special night for Thailand and its boating hub, Phuket, which has justly been voted as the best boating location, a celebration and reward for a venue that helps put our region firmly on the map,” said Olivier Burlot, CEO of Adkom Media Group who are the organisers of the awards.

"The annual Christofle Asia Boating Awards is our region’s way of rewarding and acknowledging the great work of our ever-expanding leisure maritime industry. We can all feel proud to be part of this exciting time in the industry’s history as we celebrate the hard-won achievements of both the winners and the nominees,” added Burlot.
